My overarching research interest is the melding of numerical simulations and spacecraft data analysis to study plasma circulation in planetary magnetospheres. Currently my research is focused on the circulation of heavy ions in the magnetospheres of Mercury and Saturn. I am particularly interested in the extent to which plasma processes at either planet are influenced by internal conditions (such as a source of heavy ions) and external conditions (such as the solar wind or interplanetary magnetic field). Spacecraft measurements provide both motivation and ground-truthing for models, which in turn further our understanding of data by enabling a global time dependent view that can isolate cause and effects.
